Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Day 1: Day 1.

Fly Addis Ababa → Arba Minch – Excursion to Dorze Approx. 70 km | 2 hours total driving Your journey begins with a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch. The preferred option is a morning flight, although a flight arriving in Arba Minch at around 13:20 can also be accommodated. Your guide will meet you at Arba Minch Airport before you continue on an approximately one-hour drive each way to the traditional Dorze village. The Dorze people are famous for their remarkable elephant-shaped traditional bamboo houses. During your visit, you will spend quality time with the community and learn about their traditional way of life. You will also witness the preparation of Kocho, a traditional Dorze food prepared from Inset, commonly known as the false banana plant. You will have the opportunity to taste the local food before returning to Arba Minch. Overnight: Haile Resort Arba Minch – Lake View Room

  2. 2

    Day 2: Day 2.

Arba Minch → Konso → Turmi Approx. 290 km | 5½ hours total driving After breakfast, drive approximately 290 km to Turmi, stopping at Konso and Arbore along the way. The first stop is Konso, located about 90 km from Arba Minch. Here you will visit the Konso Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its remarkable agricultural terraces, traditional stone-walled settlements and distinctive cultural heritage. The Konso are Cushitic-speaking people who have developed an impressive relationship with their environment over many centuries. Konso is recognized as Ethiopia's first cultural landscape to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After visiting Konso, continue south toward Turmi via Keyafer. During the journey toward Turmi, you will have the opportunity to visit a Mursi community near Keyafer. This is a community located outside the Mursi people's traditional homeland. We do not continue to the original Mursi villages around Mago National Park because of current security concerns in that area. Instead, this visit offers an opportunity to meet Mursi people, learn about their customs, and gain an insight into their culture without traveling to the traditional homeland. Depending on your travel dates and local schedules, there may also be an opportunity to visit a local market or attend a traditional ceremonial event. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  3. 3

    Day 3: Day 3.

Turmi → Karo/Kara Village → Turmi Approx. 120 km | 2½ hours total driving In the morning, drive approximately 60 km one way west of Turmi to meet the Karo (Kara) people in Korcho Village. The Karo are famous for their elaborate face and body painting, which forms an important part of their cultural expression and traditional beautification. During the visit, you will spend time with the community and have a traditional coffee ceremony with a Karo family. After the village visit, return to Turmi for lunch. Depending on the day of the week, you may have an opportunity to visit a Hamar tribal market. The Hamar market is held in Turmi on Monday or Thursday, while Dimeka is an option on Saturday. In the late afternoon, around 5:30 pm, visit a Hamar traditional village and meet a local family in their traditional house. You will have the opportunity to experience their daily life and participate in a traditional coffee ceremony. If a Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony is taking place during your visit, your itinerary may be adjusted to allow you to attend it. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  4. 4

    Day 4: Day 4.

Turmi → Omorate → Turmi Approx. 150 km | 2½ hours total driving Following breakfast, enjoy an excursion to Omorate to visit the Dassanech people, one of the well-known communities of the Lower Omo Valley. The Dassanech traditionally live around the northern shores of Lake Turkana and along the lower Omo River. Their traditional economy has historically combined pastoralism and agriculture, and many communities today practice agro-pastoralism. During the excursion, you will cross the Omo River by traditional dugout canoe and continue on foot to a Dassanech village. You will have the opportunity to meet local families, learn about their culture and experience their traditional way of life. After returning to Turmi, there may be an opportunity to visit a Hamar tribal market in Turmi or Dimeka, depending on the day and local market schedule. You may also have the opportunity to attend a Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony if one is taking place and is available to visitors. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  5. 5

    Day 5: Day 5.

Turmi → Jinka → Fly to Addis Ababa Approx. 130 km | 2½ hours driving Following breakfast, drive approximately 130 km from Turmi to Jinka via Keyafer. The preferred return flight from Jinka is around 13:35, although a flight departing at approximately 10:05 can also be arranged. The departure time will determine how early you need to leave Turmi.
